Thailand

The Freedom Project is excited to be partnering with several organisations in Thailand (and soon even more) to bring freedom! Freedom from poverty, addiction and sin. Some projects are tax deductible, but we are also partnering with churches directly which is not tax deductible. We want to see people not only free from poverty and addictions but also free from sin which comes through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Thailand has a strong rapidly growing church, but with only around 1% of the population Christian, they need our help! There are many people who are trained and wanting to reach out into communities but they lack the resources to do so. We work with those who are doing it anyway, often at great personal cost, getting along side them and supporting with greater resources and prayer.

church plant - dongjen

A year ago Pastor Supot travelled 2 hours from his home town of Chiang Rai to Dongjen in Phayao to meet with 2 believers there and plant a church with them. They had returned back to their home town but there was no church there. Together they started in their living room but quickly outgrew it so God provided an old bank at a discount rate. Now just over one year old, the church continues to mature and grow. There are now also 2 additional “cell groups” or house churches in 2 neighbouring towns where Supot meets with them weekly for discipleship.

As the church is still growing as well as this part of the country being economically poor, they are in need of supplemental income to allow the work of pastoring and discipleship to continue. Currently resources are stretched and ministry is limited by petrol and food.

HANGOUT

A rented shop front nestled between a few other eateries and next to the main gates of a university in Chiang Rai is the “Hangout”. A casual place where uni students can drop in after class, or stay back into the evening and receiving tutoring or free English class.

English classes are run for free by an American expat living in the area, music classes run by a local music tutor and along with other adult mentors from the area, the Hangout is a safe place for uni students to both study and gain general wisdom for life.

It has been running for just over a year, however was funded by an individual who is unable to continue. All staff are volunteers, so the budget is small.

SHALOM HOUSE

A home in Chiang Rai for abused or at risk teenagers from surrounding villages. The program is run by a local church and houses the girls, enrols them in the local high school and provides support and parenting until they reach adulthood.

One girl, Miyo, had completed primary school in the village and her parents sent her to Chiang Rai to study high school. She lived in a dorm but suffered sexual abuse there. A relative found out about this and approached Shalom house to see if they could lodge her. She has now been at the home for a couple of years and is thriving with her peers and new family at the church.

Nah spent several years in the home while she finished high school and then went on to study social work before getting a job with a local organisation where she is now employed to support and work with other families in poverty.
